Just a quick reccomendation of some books I am using at the moment. I am using the mcse self paced training kit to work towards my MCSE certification. I have already passed the 70-290 and 70-291 using these books and resources. As well as the great practice tasks to follow my favourite part of this box set is the practice tests on the CD’s. These give you a good idea how ready you are for the exam and help you to reinforce the information you have learned from the books.

If you are working towards your MCSE then I would definitly reccomend getting this box set as it will give you the resources you need to study for the core exams.

I thought I would share some information on IT Certification practice tests for those who are looking for them.

I have used with success those included with the Microsoft Press books as well as the online practice tests available on measureup.com.

The practice tests in the MS press books are very usefull for preparing for the exam but only have a limited number of questions. The measure up practice tests are also very good, it is not the best looking website in the world but contains a good selections of questions and different testing formats.

I suggest giving both a try to see which one suits you best as it usually comes down to personal preference which one you choose (and if you require the book).

Here is a link to some of the MS press books I have used:

My friend Steve McCracken is in the process of launching a new website based around his performance art:

Steve McCracken Website

I take canvases out into everyday life and combine painting and performance art. I document the everyday moment as I go, through writing and drawing from left to right on the canvas. I take canvases around for whole days, down canals on open kayaks, up trees, in shop windows, and I have also developed them into rafts.

I am interested in the restrictions each performance brings and how these restrictions affect the mark making of my writing and drawing. This adds an element of chance into my work, which changes through out each performance. I also push myself physically within my performances with the idea that this will develop the excitement within the performance and push my work further.

Well I have just received my new Sony Erricson G502 to replace my K800i, The K800i is a good phone but I have been having issues with it turning off randomly which is obviously a pain!

I didnt research this phone before I got it so am pleasantly surprised.

First impressions of the G502 are good, it is slightly smaller than the K800i and lighter, it seems a solid phone although Sony have gone for an interesting button style, with the D-pad being split across several buttons.

One of the more interesting features of this phone is the Skype compatibility, allowing free skype calls from anywhere. This is a bonus over my iPhone as that only allows calls to be made while connected on wireless.

So far so good, I will update this review in a few weeks once I have time to test it properly.

It will be interesting to see what limitation there will be when it comes to taking this up. Guess we will have to wait and see but i will be keeping a close eye on this as it could be an interesting opputunity for those of us who were already considering a new car.

We went to check out the Exmouth cycle Path recently, I have not been along the Exe from Exmouth in many years since walking along the old footpath (which is still there). We rode this as part of a longer route taking going up around Woodbury.

Im impressed with what they have done so far, there were quite a few people out using it so it was obviously a worthwhile thing to build, and im sure will be full of people come the summer. It will be good when they have finished the complete Exe Trail around the whole Estuary, it will create a great loop linking up Exmouth, Exeter and Dawlish.

Have just downloaded the new skype app for the iphone but already I am having issues with it. Manged to set it up and test the voice quality to the test account and it seems ok. It is a bit dissapointing that you cant make calls while on 3G but its a free app so cant really complain too much!

However the problems started when to connect with one of my contacts, as soon as I select a contact from the list it immediately crashes and closes the app, so its pretty much useless for the moment.

Hopefully there will be more discussion about this over the next few days and some fixes for these early issues.

UPDATE: This issue was resolved by reinstalling the app. Obviously this is an annoying issue. My phone us standard and has not been hacked in anyway.

Where to Start with IT certification?

Like with most things in life you need to start with the basics! You need to give yourself a good grounding in basic computer and network functionality before you attempt to tackle more specialised subjects.

In light of the above comment the best way to start your path to IT certification is with the following Exams:

Comptia A+
The A+ exam will give you a good knowledge of general pc hardware troubleshooting and a background in how computers function. It is vendor neutral so makes a good starting point for moving into other more vendor specific certification streams.

Comptia Network+
The network plus is like the A+ exam but aimed at networking subjects, again it is vendor neutral so does not focus on specific products or technologies. It will however introduce you to TCP/IP and other networking concepts which you will need to know about during your career in IT.

Microsoft MCDST
The Microsoft certified desktop support technician exam is specific to support Microsoft Windows XP. At the moment this is the most common desktop operating system so learning how to support it properly will set you up for entry level desktop support roles.

These three exams will give you a good foundation to build on and are a good starting point before working on to more advanced certifications such as the MCSE and CCNA.
